See Hawaii like a local

Flying Mokulele Airlines is an exotic experience

Whether passengers are headed to a business meeting or vacation spot, flying Mokulele Airlines is better than the run-of-the-mill alternatives. It’s a wildly exotic experience all its own. Flying low over the coastline in a Cessna® turboprop, passengers get a bird’s-eye view of Hawaii’s lush tropical forests, breathtaking volcanoes and humpback whales swimming in the Auau Channel’s warm, shallow waters.

Mokulele offers scheduled interisland flights to ten airports on Oahu, Lanai, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii — the big island. According to Ron Hansen, president and CEO of Mokulele Airlines, every seat feels like first class.

“Because we’re not flying at a jet’s altitude, you can see waterfalls on the edges of the islands and whales during whaling season, which runs December to early May. Everybody gets a window seat, and the views are unbelievable. Every flight is a sightseeing trip.

From the airplane’s windows, passengers enjoy an abundance of amazing scenes. Over Lanai’s North Shore, the rusted hull of an abandoned 1940s oil tanker is still visible near Shipwreck Beach. On approach, passengers can see Kaumalapau Harbor bustling with commercial activity. Over Honolulu’s Pearl Harbor, white sandy beaches and breathtaking scenes of the city skyline offer postcard-worthy sights.

Mokulele transforms island hopping into an exciting, must-do weekend adventure or memorable vacation experience. Since the airline utilizes Cessna Grand Caravan® turboprops, the flights are surprisingly affordable, making it an inexpensive way to escape Honolulu’s crowded, big-city atmosphere and see more of Hawaii and its natural beauty.

International appeal

Getting close to Hawaii’s animal residents may be easier than expected. On each flight, Mokulele Airlines allows one pet on board. Generally, that means a dog or cat or maybe a rabbit. A few lucky passengers may even have the opportunity to sit nose-to-beak with an adorable white cockatoo named Nanea.

Yes, one of Mokulele’s frequent fliers is a bird. She sits on the shoulder of her owner, an animal care manager  who commutes from his home in Kona to Kahului where he works at an animal sanctuary.

Sharing the cabin with a cockatoo and seeing whales breach in the distance aren’t the only unique aspects of flying Mokulele. Different U.S. Transportation Security Administration rules apply to the nine-seat Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft, making security a breeze.

"It makes it a lot easier to travel. You can arrive at the airport a few minutes before departure and expect to get on the flight. It’s easy in, easy out." Ron Hansen, president and CEO of Mokulele Airlines

Mokulele operates its own terminals, which means most of the time parking is free, an especially nice perk for locals who want to get away for a long weekend.

“Hawaii’s always been my favorite place in the whole world. I’ve been going back and forth for years while in the Air Force, as an airline pilot, on vacations and now as a resident. It’s paradise. It’s beautiful. When people fly Mokulele for the first time, most are surprised that we fly single-engine airplanes. After they ride on our Grand Caravans, they all agree it’s the highlight of their trip,” said Hansen.
