Top Hawk is leading the way for aviation programs to continue training the next generation of pilots. Top Hawk is a partnership between Textron Aviation and top aviation schools to provide students with access to the world’s most popular trainer, the CESSNA SKYHAWK.
Select universities and Cessna Pilot Centers will participate in Top Hawk to promote general aviation and connect future pilots to higher education. They will receive a factory new, custom branded Cessna Skyhawk to use for the duration of the program to promote aviation at air shows, aviation contests, and recruiting events. Top Hawk aircraft also allow schools to showcase their connection to Textron Aviation’s reputable internship program and support discovery flights and learn to fly programs.
Congratulations to Anson Aviation, Flight Training Professional, Great Basin Aviation, Utah State University and The Yellow Jacket Flying Club, who are participating in the 2023 Top Hawk program to promote general aviation and connect future pilots to higher education!

Great Basin Aviation
Great Basin Aviation was founded in 2018 and is Northern Nevada’s only Cessna Pilot Center and the only Part 141 flight school in the area. The school standardizes with late model Cessna 172 aircraft only, including some with G1000 avionics. Great Basin Aviation started with two aircraft but is now up to nine with a tenth coming in the near future! Great Basin Aviation serves students who want to learn to fly recreationally and also many, many more who have professional aviation as their goal. These students often stay with the school for all of their certificates/ratings, Private Pilot to CFII.
With Lake Tahoe in our backyard, the gorgeous Sierra Nevada mountains as our neighbor, and Class C airspace as our home, our students fly in the most beautiful and technical of locations, gaining perhaps some of the most applicable flight skills and experiences in the nation. However, this privilege requires safe and knowledgeable flying and instruction. Our flight instructors are carefully selected to be skilled and safe pilots, with an emphasis on their teaching ability.
Community is the heart of Great Basin Aviation. With the airport in the center of town, Reno embraces aviation, and we work to give back to an incredible community that supports us. The flight school is actively involved as a partner in education with our local school district and, hosts an in-house Youth in Aviation Day for our area’s young aviation enthusiasts, among other local events. Great Basin Aviation values partnerships with other like-minded companies and organizations. These partnerships allow us to educate and advocate for aviation in our community and share the numerous opportunities that await in the field. We continually seek to leverage our resources to do good in our community.
Great Basin Aviation loves to watch the growth of our students. From that first solo to riding in the right seat and teaching the future generations of pilots, it’s always a privilege to witness their success. Several of our graduates are now flying professionally in civilian and military aviation. Great Basin Aviation is incredibly grateful for being selected as a Top Hawk recipient and can’t wait for the aviation community in Reno, and beyond, to make use of this beautiful airplane. We look forward to the continued expansion of Great Basin Aviation, and with this addition we’re only closer to what we aspire to achieve.
Utah State University
The Aviation Technology program at Utah State University prides itself in applying cutting-edge technology with exceptional training to produce high quality pilots and technicians the industry needs. Three B.S. degrees are offered in the Aviation Technology program — Professional Pilot for fixed wing and rotorcraft (helicopters), Maintenance Management and Aviation Management with an emphasis in Unmanned Aerial Systems or Airport Operations.
Aviation has been a part of Utah State University since 1939 with a four-year degree offered as part of the nationwide Civilian Pilot Training Act. The aviation program has evolved from providing military training in flight and maintenance to include Unmanned Aerial Systems and a new Master of Aviation Science degree. Today, USU has several options for students to learn to fly in the Professional Pilot fixed wing program, or in a rotary program with the Robinson R-22 and R-44 helicopters. Students can also earn a two- or four-year degree in Aviation Maintenance Management, and a degree in Aviation Management, with an emphasis in UAS or Aviation Operations.
With two campus locations, our 400 flight students can learn to fly in high-altitude mountainous terrain and in all four seasons in our 41 aircraft. USU has pilot bridge programs with multiple airlines, including SkyWest, Envoy, Republic and Horizon, as well as maintenance connections with Delta and Duncan. Many graduates also enter military service, flying in all four branches with aviation opportunities, and we welcome VA students in all of our programs in the STEM certified degrees. The Flying Aggies are a fully accredited FAA Part 141 flight school, and provide the R-ATP certificate for qualified graduates.
USU was ranked #13 in the Top 25 Colleges for Aviation Degrees, and #3 in the nation for online graduate degrees.
The Yellow Jacket Flying Club
The Yellow Jacket Flying Club (YJFC), a student organization organized in 1945 as the Georgia Tech Flying Club, celebrated its 75th Anniversary on July 27, 2020, and is one of the nation's oldest continuously operating collegiate flying clubs. Primarily a student run organization, the YJFC is open to all members of the Georgia Tech community including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and direct family members thereof. Whether a new member enters our club with no flight training experience or with their Commercial Pilot License in hand, the YJFC’s goal is to further expose them to the wonderful community of aviation, as stated in our constitution, by:
- Stimulating interest in aviation by disseminating flying information to the Georgia Tech community
- Bringing together those students who have a common interest in aviation
- Supporting members in pursuing FAA Pilot Certificates and Ratings.
We accomplish this by providing the opportunity to further develop members’ interest in flight through social meetings, intercollegiate fly-ins, flight training, and our network of fellow pilots and aviation enthusiasts.
The YJFC owns and operates a fleet of Cessna 172 aircraft and provides flight training to its members interested in earning pilot certificates ranging from Private Pilot, Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot, to Certified Flight Instructor. The Club currently has over 200 members, 70% of which are active pilots, and many go on to achieve their goals in airline, corporate, and military aviation careers.
The Club promotes interest in aviation for all members, including those not pursuing flight training by offering weekly meetings for fellowship and aviation-related programs. Examples include speaker engagements, social engagements, museum excursions, and tours of local aviation centers in addition to several flying trips each semester including fly-ins with other universities, airshows, and trips to events or points of interest; i.e., rocket launches, AirVenture, SUN 'n FUN, etc.
The YJFC is honored to be a recipient of the 2023 Top Hawk program and will continue operating and promoting Cessna products as it has for more than 75 years.
